Playing Beginner Piano

Ellie Plays Guitar

“My kid is a musical genius.”

Who among us has said that?

No, really. My five-year-old loves to sing, try her hand at instruments, and–as a leftie–she’s truly one of those people with an ear for plunking out a tune.

A few years ago at Christmas, my father gifted us with one of those Casio player pianos. I found it here, so you can take a look. She’s been hammering on it since she could reach the keys. Now, at 5, I’m determined that she can start lessons as soon as she learns how to play scales. Darned if she hasn’t been practicing ALL morning.

In my mind’s eye, I remembered a yellow practice piano book that I used as a beginner…um…let’s just say, a REALLY long time ago. So, in self defense of her happy plunking, I went online to find some free downloadable beginner piano tunes. Gold. It’s EVERYWHERE.

Here are a few of them:

GMajor Music Theory — that hosts a variety of downloadable tunes — here are some links to songs you can print out quick:

These are fantastic, as they show numbers underneath the notes.

I tried writing numbers on each key with a dry erase marker. This only made her want to draw on every key. I had a moment of panic, imagining her going at the Casio with a Sharpie, so we took another tack.

I took out some multi-colored sticky flags office supply, and showed her with colors how Middle C goes with all the other C’s on the board. Before I knew it, we’re all singing:

do-ray-me-fa-so-la-ti-do, “Do, a deer…” and I imagine we’ll watch The Sound of Music before bed.

Another site is www.music-for-music-teachers.com (for both piano and guitar) that has a downloadable keyboard that you can print landscape. Kids can color on them, and start recognizing the key patterns.

There are LOTS of iPad learn music programs, also. Take a look at these:

Here’s an iPad app by Kiboomu designed for toddlers/kids to teach them how to play “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.”
