We’re arriving soon. The map in the glovebox shows us just a few hundred miles from our destination. Up ahead, mountains, snowcapped peaks, rivers, valleys, our last stop.
It struck me–as Riley works his three-nail puzzle with Becca giving her ideas as to how it should be untangled–the thought on what will happen with them next as they grow up together, fall in love with one another, share in life’s firsts…The end is just another beginning. There is another trip that awaits us when this one is done.
So, with that in mind, I flip on one of my favorite tunes–Third Day, Your Love Oh Lord…there. Song 5 on the cd. Of course, because that’s where the best song always is when I make a CD.
As I listen to the words, I drift back to our road trip this summer, to the mountains. A car ride full of kids is not for the faint of heart – but our trip to Mammoth Mountain took my breath away. It was the best, first trip of summer.
The one that lingers in memory even with all of the other crazy fun things we did this summer.
The car ride up was anticipation. The hotel was a blessing beyond imagination, for both me and the girls. Upgrade has reached a whole new meaning for me with the Sierra Mountain Lodge’s kind offering of a King Suite.
Beyond, the mountains in their glory, the sunsets and sunrises beautiful enough to bring tears to your eyes.
There’s something about seeing the wonder of nature, of God’s beautiful creation all around from touching stones heated from deep inside the earth, to seeing the post-piles of “stacked” basalt that Ansel Adams photographed. That were saved from destruction of mining by people with foresight for those of us not even yet born. So that I could kneel with my daughters and run our hands over the jagged surfaces, discussing what could have happened when a volcano erupted to create such a wonder.
Restaurants, a movie out of town, walking in an icy mountain stream. All wrapped in a million pictures still to sort through. It was a bit of heaven on earth, as it should be when you are with the ones you love, hands free, with no to-do list. Footloose and free.
Photos and albums are set aside for frozen winter days, for memories of the warm light of summer sun shining on Hot Creek with the ones you love.
For now, I’ll take that three nail puzzle…twisting and turning it every which way until I learn the secret for myself. I’m loved. I’m saved. I’m in this for the journey.
